Extremeties – play

2016-09-16
duration: This adult-themed drama which opens the performing season for the Surfside Playhouse in Cocoa Beach runs over two weekends, September 16-25.
business: Surfside Playhouse
category: Theatre/Performances

Terry (Sarah Roberts) and Patricia (Becky Behl-Hill) come home to find that their roommate Marjorie (Madison Gomez, in her Surfside debut) has subdued and tied up an intruder, Raul (Matthew Paul), who threatened her with rape… but his attack had no witnesses. Was there physical evidence of the assault? Would a jury see Marjorie as the aggressor? Should they call the police at all… or take matters into their own hands? Playwright William Mastrosimone speaks to his motivation for writing Extremities following a personal conversation with a fifty five year old woman who had recently been raped. In her words: “There was a moment during the rape when the animal stopped and reached for one of my cigarettes on the night table … He couldn’t reach it … He put one foot on the floor … At that moment I knew I could kick him and hurt him … I did nothing … He lit a cigarette, raped me again and then beat me with a lamp … I will think about that moment for the rest of my life … Not to act is to have to live with a coward for the rest of your life … If I had five minutes in a locked room with him now …” (Mastrosimone) She… “did not finish her sentence. Extremities was written to fill in the blank she left.” This adult-themed drama which opens the performing season for the Surfside Playhouse in Cocoa Beach runs over two weekends, September 16-25. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 PM, Sunday shows are at 2:00 PM. Adult tickets to all shows are $25, Senior/Student/Military $22. Those under 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets are available at the door or through the theatre website at www.SurfsidePlayhouse.org. In continuous operation since 1963, the Surfside Playhouse is home to the Surfside Players and presents a full season of self-produced shows and community performances each year. Musical performances are scheduled throughout each day, with headliner performances starting in the late afternoon through 10pm most days. Multiple award-winning musicians from all over the United States will be on stage throughout the weekend. There will be competitions for flute-playing, flute-making, and art creation. This family-friendly festival will also host a wide variety of free workshops that focus on flute, percussion and other instrument playing, technical and collaborative techniques, crafting and art training, and much more. Extended workshops for advanced flute and percussion students will also be offered for a fee. In addition, vendors will sell musical instruments, Native-style and environmental arts & crafts and food. Presentations and displays by a variety of non-profit historical preservation and ecological groups, along with story-telling during the music performances, will round out the educational experiences. We also welcome children from local public- and home-schools to attend our free Kids-Day program. The event will be held at Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Dr, Melbourne, FL 32935. This beautifully wooded park has free admission and ample free parking. The Wickham Park campground is adjacent to the event area and offers campsites with full hookups as well as rustic sites. Motels and restaurants are close by, and we have arranged for discounted accommodations for event visitors. The festival is intended and designed to be family-friendly and appropriate to all ages. It is an alcohol-free event. This is the largest free Native music-related festival in the country. A full description of the festival, including a list of headlining and featured entertainers, craftsmen, artists and vendors, as well as performance times, workshops and advanced-classes schedules and registration, competitions, Kids-Day program, event volunteer opportunities, area camping and accommodation specifics may be found at: http://nativerhythmsfestival.com .
